Stop Casting Porosity!

Welcome to Catfish Stew, where we finally put a stop to all of the porosity casting that plagues society.

If you’re an Oakland A’s fan, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

If not, here’s an explanation:

For years, there was a huge sign by the freeway just south of the Coliseum that said “Stop Casting Porosity”. What did it mean? Was it a protest sign? An ad? Nobody seems to know.

To me, that mysterious sign functioned as a symbol for all the things I still don’t know. Sadly, the sign disappeared a few years ago. If I had my choice, I would have declared it a historical landmark.

Anyway, so now that the worst of my big programming project is done, I can finally get back to writing about baseball and my favorite team again. Feels good.

So how about them A’s?

2.  These links might help:

Now, as to why someone would put up signs pleading for better quality aluminum die castings (or maybe claiming that they knew how to stop this problem) ... your guess is as good as mine.

Maybe some sort of highly targeted advertising.

3.  zappala, I appreciate a seeker of truth as much as anyone, but some things are better not known. I was visualizing some concrete maker objecting to the poor quality of the sand he was using or something.

I dont know where to begin on this site but I am making a comment by the date of one of your entries. I wanted to add a bit of information on your "stop casting porosity" photograph. While you have immortalized the famous sign with your photograph and i bless you for this, you failed to mention the other message on that mysterious landmark. Above the the "stop casting porosity" sign in the picture is a wind driven- twirling banner. On that banner is the slogan "millions saved". For me,this additional message always added to the urgency of the porosity sign. Like so many bay area commuters I was mesmerized by the admonishion and it's promise.
Together, the two signs on the Nimitz freeway let me know I was in the presence of some kind of "God behind the curtain" phenomena. Now, the sign is gone and with it, the dream. As it is so often in life - We don't know what we have until we have lost it!
Thanks for posting that sign, It is proof that it really existed. I have made it into a screen saver.
