Epic Battle Monday Night!
2005-07-17 22:05
After the A’s took three of four from Texas, the A’s are now 2.5 games out of the wild card lead, and 7.5 out in the division.
If the A’s can somehow manage to sweep the Angels in the next three days, the AL West could become very interesting, indeed. The way Harden and Zito have been pitching lately, that’s not so unrealistic. But first, they’ll have to win on Monday night, as Kirk Saarloos takes on Ervin Santana.
And since the A’s are the reigning MLB Heavyweight Champs (see sidebar), Monday’s bout will not only be for AL West supremacy, it will also be the MLB Heavyweight Championship.
I’ll be in Anaheim Monday night to personally witness this epic battle. I’ll report back Tuesday morning with my impressions.
1. i'm hoping to go wednesday. if the A's win the first two, i wonder how safe it would be to show up with a broom head...
2. I've found in my many visits to Angels Stadium -- I'll be there tonight too -- that Angels fans don't seem to give too much guff to opposing fans, Vishal. They've always seemed to regard me with a mixture of incomprehension and pity that I would be foolish enough to root for a team that hasn't won a World Series as recently as 2002.
3. In all my days of attending sporting events in Southern California, I have never, ever, ever, ever, ever seen somebody come to a game with a broom. I've never seen one at Dodger Stadium or in (insert name here for Anaheim) Stadium.
Personally, I find the thought of bringing a broom to a sporting event ludicrous. Mainly because if your team loses the game that would complete the sweep, you would like an idiot because you went to a baseball game with a broom. Then you have to carry your broom back home and explain to people why you were carrying a cleaning product to a sporting event.
I'm virulently anti-broom.
4. I have seen brooms at Angels Stadium. However, Vishal, you have now been saved from having to make that choice.
5. haha, i've never actually brought a broom anywhere either. and i wouldn't seriously bring one to a game. it just felt like a fun, playfully arrogant thing to suggest before the series even started :)
however, i'll probably be wearing my barry zito t-shirt and/or an A's hat. i'm sure someone will say something to me, but i'd be surprised if it was anything other than good-natured.
i still think the A's look good to take 2/3. darn jeff davanon and his scrappy choppers.
