I recently browsed through the A’s rosters of the last ten years, and found 14 players in the last decade that I have absolutely no recollection of them ever appearing in an A’s uniform.
Most of them were from 1996-98, which makes sense, because (a) there have been plenty of time for those brain cells to evaporate, (b) the A’s weren’t very good in those years, and (c) I was working about 100 hours a week in them crazy dot-com days, so who had time to pay close attention to anything important like baseball?
Some of the names are familiar to me, but I don’t remember them playing in Oakland. Here’s the list:
- Rob Ryan, 2001, 7 AB, 0 hits.
- Jon Ratliff, 2000, 1 IP, 0 RA.
- Tim Kubinski, 1997 & 1999, 25 g, 25IP, 16ER.
- Mike Neill, 1998, 6 g, 4-for-15.
- Jim Dougherty, 1998, 9 g, 12 IP, 11 ER.
- Mark Holzemer, 1998, 13 g, 9 2/3ip, 6 ER.
- Steve Connelly, 1998, 3 g, 4 2/3ip, 1 ER.
- Scott Sheldon, 1997, 13 g, 6-for-24.
- Dane Johnson, 1997, 38 g, 45 2/3ip, 23 ER.
- Richie Lewis, 1997, 14 g, 18 2/3ip, 20 ER.
- Gary Haught, 1997, 6 g, 11 1/3ip, 9 ER.
- Paul Fletcher, 1996, 1 g, 1 1/3ip, 3 ER.
- Allen Battle, 1996, 47 g, 25-for-130.
- Torey Lovullo, 1996, 65 g, 18-for-82.
For a sec, I thought I remembered watching Tim Kubinski, but then I realized I was thinking about the guy who married a monkey.
Anybody remember these guys?
What players have you forgotten from your favorite team? Or is that like asking what you look like in a mirror with your eyes closed?
1. Jalal Leach

Dan Peltier

I not only don't remember these guys playing for my team, I don't remember ever hearing/reading those guys' names anywhere.
2. I remember Jalal Leach. Cute story about a long-time minor leaguer finally getting his cup of coffee a couple years ago.
3. I actually have Paul Fletcher's autograph, I got to meet him along with a boatload of other Phillies pitchers at spring training 1994. Fletcher's autograph was just a little overshadowed by my getting Lenny Dykstra's on the same baseball that day.
You might want to go ask the Dodger Thoughts crew what they know about Torey Lovullo...
1 - Chris Brock was a big part of the Phils' rotation for a couple of years. He was supposed to be the next Mike Grace.
Didn't Jalal Leach play Steve Urkel?
