Every Silver Lining Has A Cloud

We A’s fans just can’t ever get to enjoy anything, can we? The A’s take two in the Metrodome, but then find out that Mark Ellis has a broken index finger.

There’s a big defensive dropoff from having Bobby Crosby and Mark Ellis up the middle to having Marco Scutaro and D’Angelo Jimenez. Huge, huge bummer.

1.  if the A's make it to the ALCS, who would replace ellis on the roster?

3.  1 Bobby Crosby and a Costco-sized tub of horse pills.

4.  I assume they can take someone not on the 40-man roster. Because the only position player left who is not hurt, or on the roster already, is Jeremy Brown.

So Ginter seems the obvious choice. Alternatives would be Mark Kiger or Kevin Melillo, but then they'd be making their major league debuts in the playoffs.

5.  hrmm.. according to the mychael urban article on the A's MLB site:

"Teams can replace injured players between series, but only with players on their 40-man roster. There are no other middle infielders on the A's 40-man roster, but Crosby has been hopeful about returning in time for the AL Championship Series should the A's make it that far."

6.  Assuming the A's have at least one position player on the 60-day DL, the replacement can be any player who was in the organization on August 31, regardless of whether they were on the 40-man roster. (The K-Rod loophole.)

7.  Crosby is on the 15-day DL, but I don't see anyone on the 60-day. I'm not sure why Javier Herrera isn't on it; he had Tommy John surgery.

9.  According to this article by Jamie Newberg:

They probably will be able to get Ginter onto the roster, but they'll have to petition the commissioner for permission first.

I can't find the actual text of Rule 40(a) anywhere, though, so I can't verify this.

10.  Jeremy Brown at second base would be so moneyball though...

11.  The DodgerSims simulations of the first 8 playoff games got 6 out of the 8 winners predicted correctly. The only misses were Game #2 of the Tigers vs Yankees series and Game #2 of the Dodgers vs Mets series. The latest sim of the Radke/Haren matchup has the game pretty mush as a tossup, with a very slight advantage going to the Twins with their 52.6% pythagorean probable winning percentage of the game. vr, Xei

12.  9 Ginter isn't an option according to today's Chronicle, as he declared himself a free agent after the season.

So... hello, Mark Kiger and Kevin Melillo!
