Barry Zito is staying in the Bay Area. Seven(!) years, $126 million.
Wow.
The A’s will end up with the 10th pick in the second round as a result, as well as a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds.

2. Zito's deal just shows how insane Kevin Brown's deal was with the Dodgers.
Brown signed for 7 years / $105 million in 1998 at age 34.

Thankfully, Zito is younger and not anywhere near as surly ....

...but not as, you know, good as Brown was either. Brown was an ill-advised signing due to his age (I don't remember if he had a history of back problems at that point) but at least he was a top-5 pitcher at that time.
5. according to MLB.com, Zito has an option for 2014 at $18 million which vests if he pitches
200 innings in 2013 or
400 innings in 2012 & 2013 combined or
600 innings over 2011-2013
6. aw, shit. my favorite player is gonna be playing for my least favorite team. i absolutely loathe the giants and everything giant-related. gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. i'm so conflicted.
