Game 5 Chat: The Genesis of Duke’s Starting
2008-04-04 18:02
Justin Duchscherer makes his first start since 2003 tonight, facing Paul Byrd and the Cleveland Indians. I’m sure Duke will be a Man of our Times, and put to rest any thoughts that the plan to make him a starter was just some sort of Misunderstanding. But let’s hope Duke isn’t Alone Tonight as the only A’s player who does anything well. Please Don’t Ask where the A’s offense has been; they’ve been missing somewhere Behind the Lines. They need to Turn It On Again, and keep going forward, not get stuck in some offensive Cul-De-Sac that goes nowhere. Otherwise, Duke’s Travels will just end up forgotten in a Heathaze of Athletics losses. Here’s hoping Duke’s End is more uplifting than that.
1. We Know what We Like .... an A's victory?
2. Those are some unpleasant looking jerseys.
3. 2 Yeah, although I like these better than the old black jerseys with the green trim.
If the A's win with this jersey, though, we may see a lot more if it.
4. Man, oh, man, Duchscherer looks friggin awesome tonight.
5. 3 Very true. Those old ones were atrocious. These just look like there was a mixup at the factory.
"Black and gold? Aw, man. And the game's in five minutes! Guess we'll just have to wear 'em."
6. If Duke loses does he become the Duchess?
Uh . . . Guide Vocal!
7. 6 I couldn't figure out how to fit Guide Vocal in, either.
8. My wife is about to puke looking at these uniforms. She hates hates hates 'em!
9. Uh-oh. Dreaded Steve Sayles sighting. Please don't be hurt, Duke....
10. Nice double play. I guess he's not hurt too bad. But he's showing signs of running out of gas.
11. I really like watching Byrd's old-timey windup. But I won't complain too much if he has to pitch from the stretch.
12. For someone who can't watch the game, how has The Duke been pitching? What kinds of pitches has he been throwing? Has he played it at all differently from when he was a reliever?
The guy's probably my favorite A at the moment and I'm kinda bummed I'm still at work.
13. I missed most of that rally changing a diaper.
14. 12 He's been great. He's been working the corners with his cutter with great control.
Unfortunately, he just left the field with the trainer by his side. He didn't look like he was in a lot of pain, but still. Sigh...
15. 13
Shouldn't she know how to change them herself now?
16. Thanks Ken.
17. Well, she did, in her own way. Just as I was putting a brand new diaper on her, she decided to instantly change it into an old one.
18. Oh, nice catch by Gutierrez. Barton almost had extra bases there.
19. 13 I was on a food run to Trader Joe's. But I did to get to hear it on radio.
Clearly, Ken, the lesson is that we need to not be paying attention.
20. Let's see if we can finish this game before I take off to go play my scheduled 10:30pm(!) soccer game.
21. 20 Your rec league sounds like it has a lousy TV contract.
22. 21 Welcome to my new show. It's fantastic. It's me. It's called "I'm on Setanta Sports."

We have a little segment we like to call "Breakfast at Bladium". Jose and Sven take turns ripping our pathetic attempts to play soccer.
23. Boy, Street sure is leaving a lot of pitches over the middle of the plate to lefties this year.
24. "Mild biceps tendinitis" is the initial word about Duke.
25. 23 I'm trying to be charitable and assume that was an "I've Got a Four-Run Lead" pitch.
26. 25
he's wrecking my fantasy team .... fwiw
27. Love the Genesis references.....let's see you describe a game using songs from "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway".....
